Chemical Composition of a T-shirt

You’ve probably never wondered how the different properties of your favorite fabrics are impacted by chemistry but the chemical properties influence everything about our favorite garment from shrinkage to stain removal. Let’s look at the plain white T- shirt as an example.

According to style2designer the chemical composition of cotton is Cellulose – 91.00% Water – 7.85% Protoplasm, Pectin – 0.55% Waxes, Fatty Substances– 0.40% and Mineral Salts – 0.20%.  Basically that means that cotton is a plant, and is a highly versatile one at that. It is used in everything from jeans to knitted or woven textiles and of course the T shirt.
